Strong and Weak Coupling.

An energy level diagram for two weakly-coupled spin-½ nuclei, A and X. The parallel spin arrangements are lowered in energy by -¼hJAX and the antiparallel arrangements by are raised by +¼hJAX. Each resonance is split into a doublet, with spacing JAX.

The signals in the coupled spectrum occur at frequencies (left-to-right) (a) , (b) , (c) , (d) . That is, the spectrum of the AX-system appears as a pair of doublets, each with spacing .
